I recently completed an article for Barbara Quint’s Searcher Magazine. It is a relatively thorough examination of the remaining players in custom search engines for end-users. I briefly profiled Gigablast Custom Topic Search (Gigablast CTS), Rollyo (a very good resource), Eurekster’s Swicki (a very tricky so-called “community powered search), and even though I’m not officially a big proponent of Google, I wrote a longer examination of Google CSE. When it is published, looked for a sidebar or two on “who is using Google Custom Search.” Sure there are plenty of librarians using it (very notably LISZEN is using it to search hundreds of librarians’ blogs), but you’ll also find hackers, sneaker aficionados, viticulturists, gamers, and entrepreneurs to name a few user groups.
